When Is the Sift Coming to Minecraft? Release Date, Portal, Mobs and Dimension Mods
The Sift comes to Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027, with no date yet. Until then, play it in Dungeons II or visit Wellspring, a Sift-like mod dimension.
Mojang announced the Sift at Minecraft Live on 26 September 2026 as the fourth Minecraft dimension, after the Overworld, the Nether and the End, and the first new one in over 14 years.1 Minecraft Dungeons II came out on 29 September,2 and the Stargate mod brought Wellspring to Minecraft 26.3 on 1 October.3
When the Sift comes to Minecraft: 2027, no date yet
The Sift is coming to vanilla Minecraft, on both Java and Bedrock Edition. Mojang's recap says it is "coming to Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition next year", and Xbox Wire gives the year as 2027.14 Three things are still unannounced:
- Release date — no day or month yet, and no game drop, Minecraft's name for a content update.
- The way in — Xbox Wire says Mojang "isn't talking too much about how to access the Sift".4
- Differences from Dungeons II — nor about "how it will stand out from Dungeons II's expression of it".
It is not in the next game drop either. The drop Mojang previewed at the same show brings ice caves, icicles and a frozen zombie variant.1
What the Sift is: Minecraft's fourth dimension
The Sift is a colourful dimension of red and orange stone, green plants, ichor and healthy sculk, and in Dungeons II the illagers have invaded it for its resources and souls.5 Minecraft Live also showed it running in Minecraft itself, 10 minutes into Mojang's broadcast:6
Three things stand out in that clip, as the Minecraft Wiki lists them:
- The blub — a small rabbit-like mob that squeaks, and so far the only mob or block there with an official name.
- Healthy sculk ground — green and orange sculk blocks under sculk grass in salmon, pink and green, not the dark sculk of the Deep Dark.
- White-leaved trees — thick dark-grey trunks with white canopies and white foliage hanging underneath.
Wellspring: Stargate's Sift-like Minecraft dimension
Wellspring is a dimension in Stargate, a Fabric mod for Minecraft 26.3 by Pixly's developer, built from what Mojang has shown of the Sift. Its own page calls it "an unofficial, fan-made take on the Sift", not the dimension Mojang plans for 2027.7
Each part of the Sift shown so far has a counterpart in Wellspring, which also adds five new blocks, from Wellspring Soil to Wellspring Willow Moss:3

How to reach Wellspring: a gate and an address book
Every Stargate address leads to one of eight kinds of world, from Wellspring to an endless ocean, floating islands and a molten world of lava, and reaching one takes no commands:7
- Find a gate. Craft a Stargate Eye from an ender pearl and a shulker shell, throw it like an Eye of Ender, and follow it. Only a couple of gates generate in each world.
- Find address books. They turn up in chests in Ancient Cities, desert pyramids, jungle temples and pillager outposts. Some hold the address of the world you are in, the rest lead somewhere new, and one book can carry several addresses, one per page.
- Place a book on the gate's control panel. The gate opens once its destination is ready, which can take a moment while that world generates. It glows in its destination's colour, and coral pink means Wellspring.
Your first visit earns the Sifted Through advancement. Villages, ancient cities, pillager outposts, woodland mansions and shipwrecks all generate in Wellspring. Fire Resistance protects you from its lilac water, and eating Chorus Fruit there gives you a short dose of it.3
How to play the Sift now in Minecraft Dungeons II
Minecraft Dungeons II is an action-RPG on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, played alone or in co-op for up to 4 players.2 On Xbox consoles and PC it is included with Game Pass.4 Inside the Sift, three tides change the rules:8
Flow tide
No effect.
Thrive tide
Souls regenerate faster, and artifacts recharge faster.
Endure tide
Stronger mobs spawn, and souls stop regenerating on their own.
How to enter the Sift: rifts or the Deep Dark portal
Dungeons II has two ways in. Rifts, temporary tears in space opened by the Grand Illusioner's staff, appear across the Overworld and carry you into the Sift.19 The other way in is the Deep Dark portal, a large frame in the Ancient City with a note block machine in front of it.10 Opening it takes three things:
- Three note blocks — the machine is missing three, hidden across the Overworld, and one is in the Supreme Evoker's Tower.11
- The Twisted Warden — the portal can be used only once this boss is beaten.10
- Echo golems — they play the machine's melody, and the melody lights the portal.
In Minecraft, Mojang has not said how you will reach the Sift. Every Minecraft Ancient City already has an empty frame of reinforced deepslate at its centre, and whether it becomes the Sift's portal is not announced.12
Sift mobs: the blub, Sifters, Sculkers and bosses
The Minecraft footage shows only the blub. Dungeons II fills the Sift with four groups of mobs:5
Passive mobs
The blub, the echo golem, the tuner and the trill, among others.
Sifters
Hostile natives such as the bloombud, the fusefly and the sentinel.
Sculkers
The scavenger, the stalker and the hunter.
Bosses
The Monarch, the Sculk Monstrosity and the Harmonizer.
A blub can also follow you around Dungeons II as a pet, which comes with the game's Deluxe Edition.13
Other dimension mods, most on Minecraft 1.21.1
The other long-running dimension mods, among them the Aether, Deeper and Darker, the Bumblezone and Ad Astra, have their newest builds for Minecraft 1.21.1. Ad Astra is the only other one with more than one destination: five planets and moons, reached by rocket. The Twilight Forest and Blue Skies are missing because neither has a build on Modrinth newer than 1.20.4.14

Is there a Sift mod for Minecraft?
Not an official one. Stargate's Wellspring is a Sift-like dimension for Minecraft 26.3, and Mielon's The Sift recreates it from the trailers; that mod's author calls it "my interpretation of this dimension", not an exact replica.17
Is the Sift coming to Minecraft Bedrock?
Yes. Mojang says the Sift comes to Bedrock Edition as well as Java Edition, in 2027, with no date announced. Stargate, and Wellspring with it, is a Java Edition mod, so it does not run on Bedrock.
Can you add a new dimension to Minecraft without mods?
